Ballast and Ignitor - Dealer wants $2k

Hey guys,

So I have a low mile e46 M3 and one of the headlight bulbs recently went out.

I took the car to the dealership, and they are telling me the igniter and ballast needs to be replaced and are quoting me nearly $2k.

Does this sound right? Just was a little shocked at the price.

Also, would purchasing a brand new headlight unit be easier? Does a new headlight come with the ballast and igniter?

Thanks gents!

Sounds fairly reasonable for a dealership, if they're changing everything (Bulb, Ballas, Ignitor)

I have a 2004 w/ 38K miles

I had a light go out a couple years ago, took car to and independent. They charged me $500 for Diagnostics, two new bulbs and install.
No Ballast or Igniter

About a week later the same thing happened to same light. I swapped the ballast from left to right but had same issue in original faulty light.

Therefore I ordered an ignitor for the faulty light and fixed the light for about $100.

This year had issue with the other light, swapped ballast again and this time the issue followed the ballast. Ordered a new ballast $300+, installed in faulty light and it was fixed.

It wasn't difficult at all.
