Can I put a spare tire in the trunk?
Maybe I am the only one, but the car weighs almost two tons so it is never going to be lightweight. I expect to use the car as a daily driver and I would like the option of a small tire and jack like there is for the G20.
Is there a reason it won't work? |

M cars don't have spares because it saves weight. They come with a tire patch kit with an air compressor. You could put a spare in the trunk with a small jack I guess, but if you have the AWD G80, you have to match the rolling diameter or risk damaging the AWD system. I don't know how the rear LSD will react to a small spare on the RWD M3/4.

X3/4 M are staggered? Good to know. What's the recommended range on the spare. Something like 50 miles? I know on my Audi's and Subaru's I couldn't even mix and match tire tread wears, they all had to be about the same, but that's for daily use. If the range is only 50, I believe the Mobility Kit is the same and you don't have to jack the car up or swap the wheels.

Tire sizes are only slightly staggered on X3M. Mine is 255/40/21 and 265/40/21.

the patch kit does come with the car but I know first hand knowledge it doesn't always help or work. I was stranded on the famous HWY 1 out here in CA for 5 hours waiting for a tow truck one year due to a flat. Tire patch kit didn't do squat. I told myself I would consider putting a spare wheel in my trunk if I ever were to go on a trip like that again. I knew a lot of members on here who were commenting in that thread also that did the same. I think its smart even just to get you close by where you can address the problem. But I personally would only consider this on a trip where I know the route would be isolated such as the situation I was in on HWY 1. I wouldn't do it for a DD on my normal commutes

I will be getting base model (RWD only). The only reason I want G80 is it is the only way to get MT. I have a mountain cabin in a remote location and I go there a lot. 50 miles would get me to civilization. I could buy the G20 part but there is no place to mount it conveniently

My current M340i came with run flats which were swapped out to Michelins PS4S and all I did was buy the Tire inflator repair kit on Amazon since my car didn't come with one. Car is my daily driver and where I live and work doesn't require me to lug around with a spare daily since it's a Metro area.
I have gone as far as Key West, FL thus far in the car without worries. In my case, a spare would only be necessary if I was crossing state lines or traveling thru rural areas, none of which I do. My old E46 that came with a factory spare was used no more than 5 times over a span of ten years. And in those instances, spare was on for a day at most.

I keep an amazon tire pump on me at all times. It plugs into the cigarette lighter.

It charges through a wall socket or your car's lighter, but the battery lasts for a long time. I pumped up all my buddies cars after a track day, 4 cars, 16 tires, and didn't even put a dent in the battery bars. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07CTGM2LD..._WdQkdWM3cY7ua

I have gotten spares for almost all of my M cars. A good place to get them and the associated equipment--jack, etc.--is Bimmerzone: https://bimmerzone.com/collections/bmw-spare-tire

If its summer and you dont feel the need, remove the spare for better driving, handling. When it turns over to winter, put the spare in for extra peace-of-mind. I used to do the same for my RWD 3 series. Currently have AWD and no spare. |
