And there lies the problem, it is boring, quick, but boring.

Mine had a procede on it, it was quicker than my M3 by quite some margin, but it was a different kind of speed, a secluded, closeted speed that just leaves you feeling a little numb.

I sold mine and bought another SMG M3.

The E46 is different, I find myself nipping out at midnight in December when it is freezing and raining outside just to go for a drive, it gets you in the way the 335i never can. I can go out for 2 hours up to the coast along all the back roads and never really break the speed limit and it is still exciting, just the way you flick the car from corner to corner.
The thing with the M3 is it is raw, you get to 4000rpm and it starts to come alive, get to 5000rpm and the engine is singing, 6000rpm and the thing is going balistic, the whole car feels like it has lost half its weight, it dances about and does exactly what you want it to, then 7000rpm and the noise is superb, 8000rpm and you change gear, the tyres chirp as they scrabble for grip, the back end twicthes and you're back at 4500rpm and it starts all over again!!
Perfect!
I could not agree more with what was written above!! Great post gIzzE!!
M cars have a SOUL, a CHARACTER! They are more than just raw performance, they are balanced, have a history, represent the best of mechanical engineering... there are for the few car enthusiasts.

I hope to be able to keep mine forever, and may be to add a few more in the stable along the years. E46 design is timeless IMO too.

Then in 6 months when you're bored shitless of it get the M3, best of both worlds.

About to make a big move in buying a car and would like to see some suggestions, ideas or advice. I've been looking at a lot of e46 M3's for sale between 2002-2004 with and without smg. I am really falling in love with the e46's and am ready to upgrade from Acura to BMW. It has always been a childhood dream to won a bimmer. On the other hand, I am also contemplating between the M3 and a leased new 2009 335i sedan or coupe. For the money, reliability, performance, maintenance and other stuff I have not mentioned here, which do you guys think would be a better buy? Thanks guys and girls in advance for your posts. Look forward to reading them.
Do this, buy the e46 M3 first then after a full day driving ask yourself if you still want the 335.....I doubt it.... If they are both from a dealer you can always return due to changing your mind.

ken I AM IN YOUR BOAT. I work at bmw and am planning on trading in my 06 325xi for either an e46 m3 or and e90 335i. I talk about it with my buddies everyday and the debate goes on. Personally I will probably always want the e46 m since its just such a beefy classic. Though you cant do much with the i-6 3.2, you can change the intake and exhausts for even more beef, or go crazy like hpf. The 335i can be chipped easily and can instantly become a sleeper. But..yet....theres something about that e46 m3 look, the quad pipes, beefy tail, led's, csl's and the fact that ive owned an e90 since 2005....Hopefully i can get some help from work in finding an awesome e46 m3 deal. I'm really happy there are others in this situation....let us know what you end up doing. I will be in the market at the end of summer, when I have cash and the inner desire to scare the shit out of tweens with a growling m3...
