Noticed an issue with this particular Tesla’s auto dimming lights

I wonder if other car manufacturers’ auto dim functions work better when following another car.

I followed a Tesla (model/year unknown) to work today. It was dark and we were on a two lane road with intermittent oncoming traffic. The road was mostly straight with a few curves. Whenever oncoming traffic appeared, I noticed his bright lights lower to normal. When the car passed, his lights immediately went to bright even though there was a car 100-200' ahead. The driver must have had his bright lights set on auto.

This went on for approximately three miles. I'm not sure if the auto dim function needed recalibration or if he was an inconsiderate driver, but something needed to be tweaked. I would have been pissed if I was the guy in front.

BMWs seems to work fairly well on my e92. It senses the tail lights of a car 100' away. I find that the real issue is I often have my brights on on curvy roads and in that case it tends to turn them off only when the oncoming car is very close. My next car doesn't have them and I don't think I'll miss it all too much.

Things my car has to have include auto-dimming mirrors.

My auto dimming high beam works almost perfectly. When driving towards rear tail lights, no matter how far, it recognizes the tail lights and dims accordingly.

As far as oncoming traffic I would say it dims just as effectively. I would say about the same timing as if I were to do it myself. The only exception is that if an oncoming car has a one dim and one normal brightness headlight, it keeps the high beam on for some reason.

I have not really needed to use this on my Model 3 yet since it's always at home in the "city" and I rarely drive it at night. The auto high beams on my Ford truck however I have used a lot and I would say it works fairly well and errs on the side of caution turning them off sooner and more often than I would. That being said sometimes it gets confused and wont turn on when it's pitch black.

A note on the Tesla though. They like to add features through software updates. I know the model 3 did not have rain sensing wipers and at some point it was added with an over the air update. That means it's totally software based. I'm not sure what other mfg use to do the rain sense however since Tesla could not add hardware they use the camera they use for autopilot and so it's one of the worst rain sense wipers I've ever used. Maybe they did something similar with the auto high beams.

The auto dim on the Model 3, along with the auto wipers, are nortoriously bad. An example of over engineering to save a few pennies per vehicle.
