Thanks for sharing the info. It's much appreciated. Do you have a page number so those of us with a 6MT can reference?

I checked the warranty and service manual for my car and it does not say replacing transmission fluid for break in service for 6MTs. Mine is a 2016 , is it different for 15?

My car is in for service now and SA says transmission fluid is not getting changed as per their service bulettin. Thats what i see in the service manual too as posted above.

To those who got it changed by dealer are you 15 or 16 ?

During my 1200 Mile service, dealer put in 5w30 oil. I drove around for a few weeks with the oil, and decided to get the 0w40 (which is recommended in the manual) (got the oil from ecstuning.com). I put in the oil this Saturday. The car became noticeably quieter (engine wise). Started to run a lot smoother as well.

I think you are way too paranoid and wasting money on maintenance which the dealer needs to be doing anyways and built in to the car price.

I might be.

Unfortunately, dealer did not spend the money to put in the correct oil. So the extra $80 I spent was probably more for a piece of mind, which is deff worth it (to me at least).

It makes it a bit easier for me to do all the maintenance with the car, due to the fact that my dad has a shop. Probably would not be doing all of this, if I had to do oil changes without lifts and tools. Kinda enjoy working on the car anyways and all the horror stories I have heard with dealers from people and personal experiences, pushes me to work on the car that much more.

BMW Manual

I see BMW got around to changing the wording in the manual for the M3/M4 and talking about the "lifetime" fluid in the transmission. Lifetime fluid is automotive "BS." Another cost that BMW has decided to pass onto customers if one desires proper maintenance.

I'm on my second 6MT fluid change at 17,000 miles (2015 M4). I'd rather the peace of mind that any metal is removed and the stressed fluid (track days) has been replaced.

For all of you that don't change the 6MT fluid - do us a favor and make a note of this in your service manual so that someone with half a brain won't buy your car second hand. It will just result in problems once the mileage stacks up on the 6MT.

What intervals should you change the 6mt fluid? My dealership did not change at break in and am planning to get it changed at the next service around 10k, is that too long??

The service manager spoke with BMWNA, who has confirmed that the running-in service, for the manual transmission M4, is indeed only the differential and engine oil. The 6MT contains "lifetime" fluid according to BMWNA. I pressed the point regarding the service manual booklet and how it reads contrary to this. He suggested I take it up with BMWNA directly, which I have via online email.

Bottom line: I'm happier to pay for the proper servicing of the car and deal w/this after the fact. "Lifetime" fluid really translates to an engineering trade study being perfomed that says, under typical conditions, the fluid and the metal contained in the fluid from running-in, likely won't harm the transmission - in most cases. It is a cost-saving measure. Changing the fluid is the proper approach,as was the case with every M car prior to the F8X.

I'll continue to report on what interaction I have with BMWNA.

How much did you pay for the transmission oil change?
