The SMG II was reprogrammed for the CSL with an (even) more aggressive shift (IIRC S4 on the CSL equalled S6 on regular M3) and you got the auto-blipping on downshifts.
A popular upgrade for non-CSL SMG owners. I think in its time context, the SMGII was the logic choice. Maybe not everyone's favorite, but I can understand it. I personally like SMGII. Manual or not, the E46 M3 CSL still is the coolest M3 from the past 20 years. A true special, not some marketing limited edition.

But in the technology race at the time, this made complete sense. Forget coolest M3 from the past 20 years....I'd say one of the coolest BMW's PERIOD from the past 20 years. This thing is as pure as it gets from BMW or any sports car. |
