Owner experience....
Hey everyone, I justrecently let go of my baby (e90 ///M3) the payment was amazing, but I am going back to school next year and will most likely be working part time. I still want a fun car to drive around but in the $-20K range there isn't many options. I have seen a couple e46 M3s around that price range. my question to all you is when the e46 nears 100K miles does it automatically burst into flames? lol people are steering me away from them saying they are going to break down and its going to be a money pit. I have some mechanic skills and my dad owns a mechanic shop, he normally works on POS cars not new BMWs but I still have access to tools, lifts, compressor ext. I always thought of BMW to make great cars that last a long time. I really want an e46 because I am already coming from an ///M I don't want to get stuck in a Lexus (my other choice). please help!!!
tips from high mileage guys please!! much appreciated OH!!! and i forgot to say this will be my DD in L.A. so I don't wanna be scared of getting stuck somewhere... and I will be commuting from LA to santa barbara maybe once a month maybe less ~Adam

E46 M3s are better then E92 M3s. The only thing you should check for is subframe issues (in the rear) and if they have oil leaks. Those are the common issues.

Stay away from SMG and just stick with the good ole 6 speed and you will be fine! Hardly any engine issues with these cars, except for occasional cam sensor. Be sure to check rear trailing arm bushings, common for these to go bad, causing loose feeling in rear axle. Good luck and take your time looking over the car. A lot of these cars have been wrecked, and sometimes won't even show up on Carfax. Dave.

SMG is quite complicated vs. manual gearboxes but the SMG and 6MT use the exact same gearbox. The internet might have you believe the SMG is problem prone but it definitely is not. I have both and they are equally wonderful.
