That is the scariest part of the VANOS system failure! Sorry that happened to your engine. What have you decided to do?

I ended up replacing the sprocket and dropping the the oil pan. Luckily I found the broken piece.

Very fortunate that broken tab didn't get caught in the chain or something! Engine is pretty clean. Mine was not this clean, despite regular oil changes with TWS at 8k mile intervals; filter changed between oil changes as well.
