BMW CCA M Chapter at Michelin Proving Grounds during MiX

M Chapter BMW CCA member!

https://mix.bmwcca.org/

https://www.motorsportreg.com/events...bmw-cca-877636

http://www.michelinpg.com/location.html

Join the M Chapter for an incredible and exclusive event to be held during MiX weekend on Sunday, June 25th! With professional coaching from Mike Renner, BMW Performance Center extraordinaire, we have the unique opportunity to use the Michelin Laurens Proving Grounds and their ½ mile wet skid pad; that’s as large as some professional race tracks (Bristol Motor Speedway is only 0.533 miles)!

It is a very large track with plenty of wet, polished concrete to learn advanced car control skills and to drift your car. There is a huge run-off area as well, so you have to almost "try" to get into the grass. Past similar events, run by the Sandlapper Chapter, have been an outstanding success with many drivers learning how to better manage their cars in a skid along with learning the art of "drifting". The cost for each of these participants is $300. This price includes Mike Renner's professional coaching and half day of track time. There are typically three cars on the track at once which provides a significant amount of seat time during each session. Based on experience, after that long on the skid pad, you're thoroughly done; it requires a lot of effort and focus to master it.

You can share a car, but it's still $300 per driver. Spectators are welcome, as there is a lot of great sight lines around the track.

Space is limited to 12 participants / drivers per session, so please sign up early. We will run a wait list because this event will sellout.

Note: This is a wet skid pad so tire wear in minimal. However, on rare occasions if you were to slide off the concrete pad and/or run over the sprinkler grate in just the wrong way, a tire could be damaged. Rare, but it has happened. Be sure to use at least minimum rated tire pressures.

No cancellations or refunds after June 1st

If you ever wanted to make sure you have a big safe space to send your car with full DSC off this is the place! We have secured the Michelin proving grounds and will have two sessions with just 12 spaces per session. This is a great way to see the capabilities of your BMW by doing car control and drifting exercises in it.

We will have our buddy Mike Renner from the BMW Performance Center as our lead instructor for the event.

Professional driving instructor Mike Renner has competed on track, done film and photo shoots, and taught athletes, government officials and entertainers the finer points of piloting vehicles. He’s even been serenaded by a rock star while taking him for a hot lap. But it always comes back to basics for him – teaching students to be smooth with throttle input, using vision properly, understanding the cause and effect of driving dynamics, and his favorite topic: how to drift.

YOU DO NOT WANT TO MISS THIS!

Registration requirements on motorsportreg just show CCA membership required. Is that all, or is it also going to be enforced that an M-chapter membership is added to one's account?

Yes, M Chapter mainly. Closer to the event, if not full yet, we might open to all other chapters. If already a CCA member you can add M Chapter as a secondary chapter for just $15.

It's a super fun day, and seriously having 1/2 day sessions is perfect since after four hours, even with the breaks since 3 cars on track at once, everyone is worn out since it is a very intense all encompassing time on track (there's never a straightaway! ). The good part of this is that you can seriously work on driving feel and skills at/approaching/going over the limits of tire adhesion continually. I spent many laps purposely not drifting but instead evaluating things, continually, right at the point. I would tell Mike ahead of time what I was doing so he'd have a feel for car spacing and why I was hanging back before accelerating to limit range speeds (since I'd be going faster than the other two cars on track drifting). There is no other venue that gives this opportunity on a continual basis. You get to also work on yourself a lot: your vision, your think-ahead/look ahead skills, etc, and when you (since you will) do lose it, work on that skill of continually looking where you want the car to go while it is spinning! It's fun and very educational even for extremely experienced drivers.

I took the M2C there shortly after buying it back in Sept 2018 to evaluate the EPS and decide whether or not to flip the car right away which we were prepared to do if it was anything like the F30s we had test driven years prior. Well it's been 4.5 years and the M2C is still here. Here's a link to the thread I posted on the experience with the S55/M2C on the skidpad.

One other point to mention is the water that is used is sourced from a holding pond (perhaps?), not really sure, but it isn't like rain water, so it has a high mineral content. I made the mistake of not having paint sealant or ceramic coating on the M2C beforehand (car was four days old and did event one day after break-in completed) and ended up with heavy water spotting on the horizontal (upward facing) surfaces. They came right off with a one stage polish thankfully. Even if you do have a sealant/coating on the car, if you're really anal about the paint, I'd suggest doing a refresh right before the event (spray stuff, like Griots ceramic wax) and if super concerned, bring along some spray car wash stuff and take a couple of minutes after you come off track each session and clean off the top surfaces which will otherwise bake in the sunlight...

I've also had my E90 M3 on the pad and the wet handling course there years ago now. The wet handling course event was even more fun than the skidpad! Note, the M3 had fresh paint sealant on it and I had no issues with water spotting back then. YMMV.

This event was an absolute blast. As I get some pics and videos from attendees I will post here.

This was the AM session in which I was in.

Typically Michelin does not allow cameras this time around they allowed it on the skid pad since secret cars were in other areas or under covers.

Fellow that was in the area took this video:

Thanks for posting a follow up. I'm just sorry I didn't work that event. Turned out I was out of state. Thanks for the YT video as well. It looks like a good, safe time was had by all - and glorious Laurens SC weather too.
