Coating on ground cables ends

Hi,

I am just working on my engine and starting cleaning up some electrical so I unbolted one of my ground cables and cleaned up the ends and noticed that while sanding I starting removing the coating and got down to the copper... is there a reason for BMW to coat the ends of the ground cables? Is it bad that I removed the silver coating ?
