I’ve narrowed my search down to 2 cars, and cannot decide between the e46 m3 or 135i. While the 135i is newer, I really like the look of the E46 m3. This will hopefully be my car for the next 5+ years so I want something that will be great to daily drive. I?m also willing to spend up to 16k.

Fun factor, e46 m3 hands down with the screaming 8100 red line. Long story short, I'm selling my f80 m3 and keeping the e46. Just make sure you get a PPI and be aware of the common issues like subframe, Vanos, etc. Good luck |

If 16k is your max budget, I don't think you're really in the market for an e46 M3 (though without contest it's the car I'd rather have). You can buy a car for that, but the car you buy at that price point is going to need some work.
... unless you're looking at SMG Verts. You could get a nice SMG vert at that price point.

You can definitely find E46 M3s for that price point that don't need a lot of work, they will just be higher mileage. In that price point I'd find one from a forum only that's been owned and documented by an enthusiast. Plenty of high mileage e46 out there that have had majority of the problem/weak points taken care of, just have to search. They also won't be in desirable color combos but if you're looking for a fun car that's extremely rewarding, that's the one to go with.

Like every BMW, at 100,000 mile intervals you should replace every bushings/bearing/ball joint/mount on the car, as well as the cooling system. If you DIY, that's $3000-4000. If you pay someone to do it... more. A car that has had that done already won't be $16,000.
