We lived in Aus for a short time and did the Detroit-MEB trip several times with two kids under age 6. Character building for sure. 24 hours door to door journey.

Does connecting through LAX, SFO or SEA help with access to Oahu?

100% but... means 3 extra hrs on the trip there plus hassle of connecting plus it's a LONG time to spend in narrow body airplanes.

Then to SYD you have to go through HNL so now you're scrambling at 6am to make your connection from another island or you leave a night early and change hotels blah blah fucking blah. Wife is not good at conceptualizing this until you're there and has a meltdown so i need to be the one to say "it's just not worth it".

I've been to the big island. I loved it. Very peaceful and most of the island is pretty empty. I also liked Kona (as i love coffee and chocolate) and the whole Volcano area.

I'm thinking about going back to hawaii but i'm having a hard time not going back to the big island. Are the other accessible islands that much better for different reasons (scenery etc.)? FYI we are not night owls, and don't do like bars and stuff like that. More about nature and food.

In my mind - if you love volcano's - go to the big island. Everything else is better on the others.

That's why I like Oahu so much - it has everything all the other islands have in one place. Want a major city? Honolulu. Want jungles and hikes and waterfalls? Waimea. Want laid back beach towns? Haleiwa. Want east LA gang slums? Waianae

Seriously though - lots to offer and much smaller so drives don't take hours and hours.

Everyone thinks Oahu is all Waikiki, but it's so much more. Heck - even Hawaii Kai and Waiʻalae are awesome - and they are like 15min from Honolulu.

The big island and Kauai are my favorites, while my wife's first choice would be Maui (like you we are not into nightlife, bars and such).

In my view Maui is getting to be more like Oahu was say 40 years ago or so and Kauai is like Maui was 30-40 years ago.

As for Oahu, the last thing I want when I go to Hawaii is a big city. Yes there are nicer places you can go on Oahu, but no matter what you still have to deal with Honolulu.

Looks like we won't be stopping over on the way there, may do it on the way back. I played around with Aeroplan and found lay flats for a whack of points and $3k for 4 seats! Cash price on these seats is $7,500 each so $30K worth for 4

Air Canada does a "direct" YYZ > SYD with a fuel stop in Vancouver (YVR). This is a BRUTAL flight in economy as it is all red eye, you board the 16 hr YVR to SYD leg at 2am to your body... then sit bolt upright for 16 hours THEN land in sydney at 7am... so you are awake 42 hours by the time you sleep.

I started faffing about, it was 350K points for one seat in business class (north americans would call it first) which is insane, so I added a stop in Edmonton and BANG, 170K a seat! There's a 5.5 hr lay over in YVR so will book a day room at the Fairmont which is IN the airport, grab a swim, a feed and a shower then board the 16 hr leg, have a snack and will sleep a solid 8 to 10 hrs of the 16.

GIGGIDY.

Now may consider O'ahu on the way back to break up the trip in economy. It is also faster coming east by 2 hours.

If you plan to go in the water, remember that winter is high surf time on the North Shore. Some beaches are still quite protected and calm (Waimea etc.), but many others on the North Shore have very high surf.

I believe Maui is the 2nd most popular island for tourists, but I also really like the big island. If you check flight schedules ahead of time you could probably fly into HNL and catch an inter island flight within an hour.

Thanks for the tip. Coming from OZ I have respect for the surf, always approach with healthy awareness of the potential risk. Water takes no prisoners man.

Happens almost every year. Someone buys a $600 instead of $1500 fare then starts wondering why the flight was 7 hours not 15.

They would have been even more disappointed if they ended up in Sidney New York

I have been saying the same thing for years when people say they hate Oahu. They only went to Waikiki and complain that its too "city." Yeah...cuz you stayed IN THE DAMN CITY! There is so much to see & so much to do on Oahu that I have been countless times and I still have a long ass list of things I still need to do. The food scene is amazing and ever changing. The island itself is very pretty as well and sometimes I think doesn't get its credit for how pretty it truly is
