Buying salvage m2, advice

Found an m2 that meets my spec and has only 15k miles, every carbon fiber upgrade imaginable (diffuser, steering wheel, side skirts etc) listed at a good price for if the car wasn't a salvage title. I'm attaching the dealerships explanation of the salvage title, don't know much about "fraudulently totaled cars" but say that was the case, and it's actually in pristine condition, would it be worth buying if I could talk them down into the low 30s

I would require them to give you a copy of the body shop repair order. Then I would get a pre-purchase inspection at a good independent BMW repair shop.

I would only consider this M2 if you plan on keeping it for a long time. It is really hard to get a decent price for a car with a salvage title.

Also check what your insurance company would do if the car ever was in an accident and needed repairs. Some insurance companies will not cover a salvaged car.

I wouldn’t trust the dealer on their damage assessment one bit. In my experience dealer inspections are a joke. I would get an inspection at a mechanic and in addition to that I would take it to a trustworthy body shop and have them try to figure out what all was actually damaged or repaired. Their story sounds like exactly the kind of unsubstantiated nonsense some knucklehead salesperson would peddle to make a sale.

Agree 100%.

Doubling down on this, I would not by a salvaged M2 unless it was an insanely good deal (and still would get the inspection done).

I'm definitely seeing it from that point of view as well, insurance company's don't just total cars for no reason, from what I know :

And if OP wants to "talk them down into the low 30s", it sounds incredibly overpriced for a salvage title, regardless of the circumstances.

Haha yeah after I wrote that post I thought about it some more and the whole thing is ridiculous. The insurance company totalled out a 60K+ car because a branch fell on it? Seems incredibly unlikely. And they were able to fix it for only $1500? Wow, how did the insurance inspector miss that one!

Honestly, it sounds just like one of those shitty ads - 'Why insurance companies hate this trick'.

Good luck with the car, it might be OK despite their idiocy just do your homework. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you. Let us know what you find out please!

It's priced at 38,900 which would be a great price if it wasn't a salvage car

I'd ask for the name of the adjuster who made the decision to total it, and if they actually cough it up, reach out to him or her and get the straight story.

But they won't provide it, count on it. Hard pass.

Picture I found from the salvage auction. It does seem to fit the dealers narrative that it was a number of small dents on the driver pillar( above the window) doesn't look like any other damage to roof from what I can see in that pic

I'm pretty sure there is a thread somewhere in this forum from the PO. It was a LBB M2 that had a tree fall on it and insurance totaled it. He was considering buying it back but was talked out of it.

They may have patched up that dent but I have a feeling it was an issue with structural integrity. Insurance adjusters aren't idiots. It probably wouldn't pass safety standards.

Doesnt make much sense, that dent is repairable, not even that bad, there must be more to it, maybe it was in a storm and was flooded... thats the only thing i could think of

30k is way too much fricken money for a salvage car.

Also make sure it really is a tree damage car like the "stealership" is saying, otherwise it could be a flood damage car that was cleaned up. That would be a real night mare to sort out if it was a flood car.

That pic looks like it was taken to show that particular dent. I'm willing to bet there are other pics showing the damage on the front of the car.

...and it looks like all the carbon 'bits' were installed by the original owner so the dealership didn't come out of pocket for them. Surprised the original owner didn't strip and resell them.

I saw this car as well and while it can be appealing on the surface I would certainly pass on it.
- Salvage cars will forever be a risky market and trying to sell one down the line is going to be a tremendous task when you want to get rid of this
- Financing for either yourself or next buyer is unlikely or will come at a cost compared to a clean title car. So if financing at a higher interest rate you may actually be paying more per month than what a clean title would cost
- Insuring may be an issue as noted above
- Despite it being a relatively low mileage car you have zero warranty
- A salvage M2 would have to be cheaper than the cheapest clean title M2 to even be remotely considered a "deal" and this is not. I'd rather have a clean title 2016/7 with 40k miles than a salvage 18 with 15k in a heartbeat. The numbers are way too close to make it make sense.
-As far as the CF stuff, yes it is nice, but these can be purchased aftermarket for a lesser cost so do not let these add ons skew the value of the car.
