I think in its time context, the SMGII was the logic choice. Maybe not everyone's favorite, but I can understand it.
I personally like SMGII.
Manual or not, the E46 M3 CSL still is the coolest M3 from the past 20 years. A true special, not some marketing limited edition.

100% agree on all accounts. Although that first statement regarding S4 vs. S6 is the first time I had heard that. Pretty awesome really. I love everything about SMG personally.
In hindsight, yes, 6MT should have at least been option. Would have been interesting to see the production numbers if that were the case. But in the technology race at the time, this made complete sense.
Forget coolest M3 from the past 20 years....I'd say one of the coolest BMW's PERIOD from the past 20 years. This thing is as pure as it gets from BMW or any sports car.
