We use THESE in the yard...
And THESE in enclosed areas. Our garage is sealed up but rats and mice like to hang out inside our outdoor kitchen under the counters, grill, and fridge and these prevent that in those small quarters...
I think what ends up working is a device that produces whatever frequency your particular pests find most disagreeable.
