Generally speaking, the benefit of a 5w-30 over a 0w-30 is that the 5w-30 will shear down from the 30 weight at a slower rate compared to the 0w-30 oil. The closer the two weights are, the slower that shear rate or rephrasing it, the better the shear stability.
For very cold temperatures, a 0w oil is best. For track use with a lot of heat cycles, a higher hot weight is better, but not too much (this part is difficult to figure out).
There are a lot of other numbers that determine how an oil will behave and how well it'll handle wear. BMW has a requirements (LL-01 FE) for the engine so any oil that will meet those is fine.
