The first time I was able to do this was back in 2002. I had an S2000 and purchased an old '89 Starion as my daily to keep the miles and inclement weather away from the S2K. I found it worked so well that I've had a weekend toy/daily since that time.

Currently I have 3 cars because my M2 was supposed to be my daily, but I like it so much that I ended up getting a daily to keep the miles/weather off of it (my original weekend toy is now an investment).

In some ways I prefer my daily to my M2. It's quiet, comfortable, reliable, easy ingress and egress, inexpensive to maintain, and it blends in with the crowd.

But in other ways the M2 satisfies me in a way my daily could never.

I've often asked myself if I could live with one car, and the answer is a resounding "no." I like preservation too much. If I really like something I want to keep it as nice as possible for as long as possible, and that just can't be done using it in all weather and in all circumstances.
