Was doing anywhere from 750-1200 every 5th trip to the gym. It's been a year since I had shoulder surgery and I simply can't do a crawl yet, so haven't done any laps.
For me, swimming laps has always been controlled drowning. At one point I got a snorkel and that allowed me to actually concentrate on the physical swimming aspect, instead of worrying about the breath. Yeah, I know, that's the better part of the workout. I just love being in the water.
Right now, the unheated lap pool (25yds) is my plunge pool after gym. Tougher now, the cajuzzi isn't currently heated either. Have to waddle back inside to the sauna to warm up between plunges.
