people have their reasons. they send ringers to track tests. or multiple vehicles, one setup for track, one setup for acceleration, etc. They routinely overstate power figures (for instance the new GT3 puts the same power to the ground as the 458 on a dyno, but Ferrari rates their engine as having 70 more hp). Ferrari does not take their cars to the nurburgring for track times, etc. They tried to blacklist people for modifying their cars how they want (deadmau5 wrapping his speciale with the poptart cat vinyl)
that said there is no doubt a lot of emotional draw to the car. the brand image is very powerful. seeing the prancing horse badge and the little plaque saying '16 formula one world titles' definitely makes you feel something.
