I thought it was a kitchen, duh. First clue might have been T paper.
how does the stopper work? with a rod or push/pop? or what brand is the faucet?
generally the popup assembly would be the same brand as the faucet.
The new push/pops assembly would have a nut holding the tail piece to the threaded part.
In conclusion, whoever did it had a leak and thought he could just use some "puddy on it"
It will only get worse
