Are you referring to muscle tears when you say "...goes stiff " ?
Lifted dumbbells (weighted vest push-ups) outside all last winter: in freezing rain, snow, sub-freezing wind chill. Began every session with static stretching - never any issues there, and maybe some jumping jacks or standing alternating knee to elbow crunches.
I doubt I'll ever go back to a gym membership. I know I'm not lifting as heavy but I'm way more cut and my running is better and I'm never getting any injuries.
