Historically, the M3 wasn't really about the most power or the quickest 0-60; more about chassis dynamics, driver engagement, and capabilities on track or in the twisties, all while still being able to use every day as a grocery-getter or on a school run.
Of the classic M3s, a well-sorted E46 would be my top pick. E92 coming in a close 2nd if only for the S65.
