I believe blocking the pins stops the lens from communicating fully what aperture it is at allowing the camera to keep focusing. Don't quote me on that, I read about it a very long time ago, and I might be miss-quoting as a result. But it can be done.

Tried it today and it didn't work. But all I had was scotch tape, which may not be thick enough. Not matter. It's easy enough to MF with live view.
